Can anyone thoroughly recover from Guillain Barre`?
juli b
My mother has been suffering for 8 years now, and now her life is at stake, due to everything that comes along with it ie:C.H.F. Epstein Barr, and I.L.D. I do know that G.B. is a rare disease, but more info would be helpful to my family and myself

There is a chronic form of guillain barre syndrome. My husband had the acute form nineteen years ago and was very sick. He had some nerve damage so that’s his residual. Not everyone has that.
I don’t know enough about the chronic form, but when my husband was ill the GBS Foundation was a great support.
best of luck to you and your family
I am not sure what your mother’s condition is, but Guillain Barre is NOT associated with congestive heart failure, Epstein Barr virus, or interstitial lung disease. The same can be said about the chronic form (known as Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy, or CIDP).
Regarding Guillain Barre, yes, a large proportion of people do recover with only minor neurological deficits – a significant proportion (somewhere in the vicinity of 30%) essentially recover fully. But, it has to be said that Guillain Barre is an acute disease, and recover is generally seen within 6 months, beyond which deficits are permanent.
Taking away the virus, conditions I can think of that can cause both CHF and ILD are auto-immune diseases like Lupus & Rheumatoid arthritis, and maybe something like amyloid. Severe ILD in itself can eventually lead to heart failure (termed Cor Pulmonale). One last thing that comes to mind is that some of the treatments for CIDP can cause ILD.
Not sure if that’s of great help, but all the best to you & your family.
