I know they have other tasks to endeavor, but is crafting cures for diseases one of them?

Researching the internet did not satisfy this question neither talking to an actual college professor,

Note: I am asking given that this major is on my number one career choice before lift off to college this `08 fall.

Have you ever wondered how curing disease and unhealthiness once and for all can destroy the human race?

human disease
spurs_hart_lane

If humans by some chance, manage to find a way to end all diseases for good, we will begin to experience massive overpopulation and food shortages. Resources will be used up far quicker than than they can be made and will eventually disappear all together

Unless, birth control is implemented, the day that man’s final enemy is conqured will mark the day that humanity ends.
Nanobots will end disease because the organism will be unable to overcome the machine no matter how much it evolves

The One-Minute Cure

Can a disease wipe out the human race?

human disease
Pinkerton

I know that in theory, it’s possible, but would it be in the disease’s best interest? I heard in biology and anatomy classes that viruses and bacteria don’t want their hosts to die. They want to keep their hosts alive as long as possible so that they can feed off of them as long as they can. If a person or animal were to die too quickly, the disease would find a more compatible host. So, wouldn’t a highly contagious fatal disease stop before it wiped everyone out?
I know that these diseases did kill a lot of people, but they stopped short of killing everyone, and then became relatively mild, and didn’t kill as many people.

A question about human mad cow disease?

human disease
Elle

I’ve heard that the only way to figure out the CJD (mad cow d) is the autopsy after one’s death so they can investigate the brain tissues.

The rumor I heard is
when someone is suspected to have such disease, the government supports the patients financially if they agreed not to do autopsy after death so the government can keep the CJD rate low.

Is this really true? is it real government policy?

P.S. related links and testaments from doctors, sciencetists, any government policy related people will be appreciated.

Is there any treatment for alkaptonuria? or how to reduce the effect of alkaptonuria?

rare disease
VISA SAVI KUMAR

Alkaptonuria is a rare disease that is inherited. The disease results from a deficiency of the enzyme homogentisic acid oxidase. This enzyme deficiency leads to a build up of homogentisic acid in tissues of the body.
How is alkaptonuria inherited?
Alkaptonuia is a classic recessive condition. The gene for it is on a nonsex (autosomal) chromosome. Parents of a person with alkaptonuria each have one alkaptonuric gene and a normal gene paired with it. They have no symptoms of alkaptonuria at all. Each of their children has a one-quarter (25%) chance to receive both of their normal genes, a one-half (50%) chance to receive one alkaptonuric and one normal gene (and seem entirely normal) and a one-quarter (25%) chance to receive both of their alkaptonuric genes and have alkaptonuria (ochronosis).

What is ochronosis?

Ochronosis is the darkening of the tissues of the body that is caused by pigment composed of the excess homogentisic acid in patients with alkaptonuria.

Wolman disease (also known as Wolman’s disease, Wolman’s syndrome, and acid lipase deficiency) is a rare autosomal recessive lipid storage disease that is usually fatal at a very young age.

Or at least be kept alive on plasmapheresis to remove accumulated cholesteryl esters from the plasma

Is Anthrax a human blood cells disease?Any relation between anthrax and HIV/AIDS?

human disease
catcanind

Anthrax is an acute infectious disease, caused by the spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis, that most commonly occurs in wild and domestic mammals. Anthrax occurs in humans when they are exposed to infected animals or tissue from infected animals, or when they are directly exposed to B. anthracis. Depending on the route of infection, anthrax disease can occur in three forms: cutaneous, inhalational, and rarely, gastrointestinal.

The anthrax vaccine was originally licensed in 1970 by the U.S. National Institute Of Health (NIH) and in 1972 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) took over responsibility for vaccine licensure and oversight. In 1997, the Clinton administration initiated the Anthrax Vaccine Immunization Program, under which active U.S. service personnel were to be immunized with the vaccine. Much controversy has surrounded the program since its inception, since vaccination was mandatory, and a perception developed that the anthrax vaccine was unsafe, causing sometimes

what are some careers if I am interested in diseases?

rare diseases
alissa

I love anatomy- cutting a body open and looking at the organs, weighing them, seeing what’s wrong with them. I’ve always been interested in rare diseases, like Pica, AIWS, etc. I would like to diagnose and study if there are any cures.
