You might want to have a look at the Wikipedia page for Robert Koch who first isolated and properly identified Tuberculosis and Cholera Vibrio bacilli.
His follwers, using his methods, identified loads of other causal organisms for diseases like leprosy, syphilis, typhoid and meningitis.
