I know they have other tasks to endeavor, but is crafting cures for diseases one of them?

Researching the internet did not satisfy this question neither talking to an actual college professor,

Note: I am asking given that this major is on my number one career choice before lift off to college this `08 fall.

    Well, one of the main goals of bioinformatics specialists is to come up with cures for diseases. There is so much data out there on the genome and on proteins and cellular pathways, that mining that information and putting it together in a way that can help focus on approaches to cure disease is a crucial part of biomedical research these days.
