I am looking for diseases that are not commonly known about. Anything you guys can think of would be great.

    i consider that QUITE bizarre.
    but thats kind of commonly known.

    Here’s one you don’t want to be exposed to: candiru. It’s a tiny parasitic fish (Amaconian Parasitic Catfish) in the amazon that finds its way into openings in the lower body. It prefers, uhh, genitals. Once in, it’s got spines that it uses to lodge itself in place and draw blood from the host species until it can grow up to 6″ long. Very difficult and painful to remove. Maybe not quite a disease, but a medical condition that’s about as bizarre as they get. They say a very tight bathing suit may help, but I’ll stick to pools.

    Fatal Familial Insomnia (FFI) is fascinating. It’s a very rare disease that’s usually inherited and affects a handful of families in the world and they basically die because they lose the ability to sleep. It’s caused by prions, the same strange infectious agent that causes mad cow disease (BSE) and CJD. A brilliant book has recently been published about FFI called “the family that couldn’t sleep”:
