Lyme disease is a disease found almost exclusively in North America. It’s caused by a bacteria spread by tick bites.
It starts with a spreading rash and can affect the joints, heart and nerves.
It is treated with simple antibiotics but can be fatal if untreated.
Just adding to what JoePub…said–
4 members of my family have had Lyme’s disease. It’s carried by deer ticks, which are much tinier than regular (dog) ticks. None of the members of my family ever saw the tick on them.
My brother-in-law was misdiagnosed as having gouty arthritis for many years, back before LD was identified–but new testing confirmed it was Lyme’s disease.
My son, age 8 at the time, never even had a rash–his symptoms started with achy joints, then a big swollen knee.
But all my family responded to antibiotic treatment well.
It is much less prevalent in CA than it is on the east coast (something to do with a lizard in CA that’s in the spirochete’s food chain…..We lived in CA for 4 years, but are back east again–that’s how I know this).
