looking for a title of a book about a man that wakes from coma & finds disease kills most of human population?

I read a book that started out with a man that was unconscious from being sick in the beginning and he woke up to find that most of the human population was killed off. Eventually the animals took over one by one. First the mice then the cougers and so forth until the balanced was leveled again. The remaining humans started there own rituals and language. by the end of the book the world was a completely different place.
