Smallpox only exists in laboratories located in the US and Russia.

Also, Proteus Syndrome, an extremely rare disorder similar to but more severe than acromegaly has yet to be confirmed in a living person.

A condition that is slightly less rare but very interesting is progeria. There are few living examples of this disease because it causes fatality at a very young age.

There are lots of rare diseases. In fact, there is a catregory which contains them, called “Orphan Diseases”. Often, they are hrerditary, but so rare that there is no research funding to discover treatment for them. One which made the news several years ago was called “Mandi’s Disease”, in honor of a seven year old girl who had it, and had to have her leg amputated as a result. It was a type of inherited immunodeficiency. Another example is the condition in which a person is born without the ability to make melatonin, and consequently will not live long with any exposure to daylight at all.

Often, a disease is only thought to be rare until people talk about it, and then it is discovered that a lot of people have it, but believed they were alone. Therefore, answers to this question may help sufferers of these less-researched diseases find each other.
